Kenya and Japan Strengthen Health Partnership for UHC

Kenya and Japan have reaffirmed their commitment to a long-standing partnership in the health sector. The focus of this renewed collaboration is advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and strengthening Kenya’s health system resilience.

On February 3, a consultative meeting took place at Afya House in Nairobi between the Kenyan Ministry of Health and a Japanese delegation.

Health Sector Transformation and UHC

Discussions centered on Kenya’s ongoing health sector transformation agenda, with a primary goal of achieving UHC. A key emphasis was placed on strengthening local manufacturing of health products and technologies to reduce reliance on external supply chains and improve national and regional health security.

Potential Areas of Collaboration

The two nations explored potential collaboration opportunities, including vaccine and biologics manufacturing, technology transfer, skills development, and health innovation. These areas are aligned with Kenya’s strategy to build sustainable domestic capacity for producing essential health commodities.

Continued Partnership and Support

The engagement reaffirmed the established partnership between the governments of Kenya and Japan in supporting health sector development. Dr. Ouma Oluga, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Medical Services, expressed appreciation for Japan’s continued support, highlighting a shared commitment to global health security and sustainable health outcomes.

Alignment with National and Global Initiatives

The meeting emphasized the importance of aligning Kenya’s national health priorities with continental and global initiatives. This includes Africa’s agenda on local manufacturing of health products and technologies, which President William Ruto is championing.

Commitment to Structured Cooperation

Both parties committed to advancing structured cooperation through technical partnerships, capacity building initiatives, and institutional linkages between Kenyan and Japanese public and private sector actors. The engagement concluded with a shared resolve to translate the strong bilateral relationship into practical, impactful, and sustainable initiatives benefiting Kenya, the region, and the global health community.

The meeting included Nazila Ganatara, Director of Health Products and Technologies; Omar Ahmed from Health Sector Coordination; Rabera Kenyanya of the Kenya BioVax Institute; and other senior officials from the Ministry of Health.
