Kenya: Industry Talks explores DJs’ role in Africa’s music economy

The discussion brought together Schwaz Isaboke, Coco Em and Njerae to discuss the development of DJ culture in Kenya and across the continent.

The panel focused on both creative and commercial aspects of the profession, including music curation, set-building and audience engagement, alongside practical issues such as bookings, contracts, branding, endorsement opportunities and digital visibility.

The discussion also examined the business structures underpinning the nightlife sector and the growing role DJs play within that ecosystem. Topics included revenue generation, talent valuation and the contribution of DJs to audience growth, venue activity and brand partnerships.

Organisers said the session also addressed questions around ownership within the DJ industry, the transition from DJing into music production, and the way African DJs are increasingly positioning themselves in international markets.

The event was aimed at DJs, artists, venue operators, music entrepreneurs and other industry stakeholders seeking practical insights into career development and long-term sustainability within the creative economy.

The session forms part of the broader Industry Talks series, launched in 2024 and curated by Anyiko Owoko. The initiative focuses on business and marketing issues affecting professionals across music and related creative sectors, including film.

Organisers said the programme has expanded this year to include workshops and a companion podcast, VIP ACCESS by Anyiko Owoko.

Upcoming workshops are expected to feature Fancy Fingers and Coco Em, while previous discussions in the series have explored topics including music for film and television, content creation, storytelling and branding within the music sector.

A recording of the discussion will remain available on the Goethe-Institut Nairobi Facebook page for 30 days.

You can access a recording of the full event via the Goethe-Institut Nairobi Facebook page.
