Kenyan Clubs Face Venue Shortage With Stadium Closures

Kenyan football teams are facing a venue crisis as Sports Kenya announced the impending closure of Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums for renovations ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. This situation mirrors previous disruptions experienced by Kenyan clubs due to stadium closures for renovations.

Sports Kenya Issues Worrying Notice

Sports Kenya Director General Gabriel Komora announced that renovations will begin this weekend, rendering both stadiums unavailable for use from February. Komora stated the goal is to match the quality of the tournament hosted by Morocco and expressed a commitment to preparing Kenyan facilities accordingly. The limited availability of alternative venues presents a significant challenge for Kenyan teams.

Gor Mahia and Leopards Told to Wake Up

During the previous renovations for the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024), Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos and Nairobi’s Dandora Stadium were utilized by Nairobi-based teams. However, the overuse of these facilities led to issues such as a bumpy and muddy turf at Machakos Stadium. Leopards chairman Boniface Ambani has urged Gor Mahia and Leopards, the country’s two oldest clubs, to invest in their own facilities, emphasizing the independence and control that comes with owning a home ground.

Where Will Mashemeji Derby Be Played?

The upcoming Mashameji Derby between Leopards and Gor Mahia, scheduled for April 26, is now in doubt. The derby was previously played outside of Nairobi at Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay, and a return to that location is possible unless a suitable venue can be secured. Kasarani Stadium recently hosted a CAF Confederation Cup match, and Nyayo Stadium will host the HSBC 2 Sevens tournament in February.
