Kenyan Official Denies Corruption Allegations, Urges Unity

Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has dismissed recent media reports alleging corruption at the National Youth Service (NYS). He asserted that the institution is stable, accountable, and operating within its mandate to benefit young people.
NYS Corruption Claims
Ruku stated that the allegations are based on historical issues dating back to 2013-2016 and do not reflect the current state of NYS. Upon assuming office, his ministry took action to address potential issues, including halting payments of pending bills for thorough verification.
Forensic Audit and Pending Bills
The ministry raised concerns about ballooning pending bills at NYS and requested the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to verify their legitimacy. A subsequent forensic audit revealed fictitious pending bills. Ruku emphasized that the government will not pay for goods and services not delivered and assured there is no cause for alarm.
NYS Operations and Youth Recruitment
Ruku highlighted that NYS is currently operating effectively, providing paramilitary training and skills development to young people. Thousands more youths are expected to be recruited next month. He called on the media to report accurately on the matter and emphasized the government’s focus on unity and equitable development.
Huduma Centres and Drought Relief
The government is expanding access to services through the establishment of approximately 60 Huduma Centres nationwide, with more planned. Ruku also assured Kenyans affected by drought that the government has sufficient food reserves and will prevent citizens from suffering due to hunger.
Political Unity in Mt. Kenya
Ruku urged residents of the Mt Kenya region to remain united and reject attempts at division by leaders. He affirmed that President William Ruto and Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki are the undisputed leaders of the region. He predicted President Ruto will serve until 2032, after which he will hand over leadership to his deputy, who will then serve two terms.
Upcoming Development Tours
President Ruto will begin development tours across the country next month, and the government has mobilized resources to complete stalled projects. Gatundu North MP Elijah Njoroge echoed these sentiments, stating that the Mt Kenya region is rallying behind President Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration.
