Kenya’s Football Sees Boost from Trust and Inclusion

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed has outlined a vision for the revival of Kenyan football, emphasizing credibility, responsible resource management, and inclusive development across all disciplines. This vision aims to restore trust among sponsors and partners and foster a return of confidence in the sport.

Mohammed highlighted recent progress, attributing it to increased transparency, accountability, and stakeholder engagement.

Sponsorship and the FKF Cup

Mohammed emphasized the importance of providing value to sponsors and pointed to improved collaboration and long-term planning as key areas of growth. He specifically praised the FKF Cup title sponsor, noting the competition’s year-on-year growth.

The FKF Cup will feature 64 teams this season, including 15 from the top tier and 47 from lower divisions. First-round matches are scheduled for February 7 and 8, with the final set for June 17, 2026. Mohammed noted the tournament’s rising profile, citing fan turnout, matchday atmosphere, and competitive finals, referencing the recent match between Gor Mahia and Nairobi United.

Development of Futsal and Beach Football

Beyond traditional football, FKF plans to expand support for alternative disciplines like futsal and beach football. Mohammed acknowledged Kenya’s recent elimination in the AFCON futsal qualifiers but described it as a learning experience.

FKF is committed to increased investment in futsal, with plans to establish a structured national futsal league. This is considered the most critical step toward improving competitiveness. Beach football will also receive enhanced support, with both disciplines playing a role in national team development ahead of the 2027 AFCON, which Kenya will co-host.

These programs will benefit both men’s and women’s teams, aligning with FKF’s broader long-term vision.

Future Outlook

Mohammed expressed optimism about future competitions, stronger partnerships, and increased fan engagement. As defending champions Nairobi United await their Round of 64 clash, the FKF Cup provides a platform for revival and the realization of Kenyan football’s renewed ambition.
