Nigeria Dominates Mozambique in Comprehensive Victory

Nigeria defeated Mozambique to advance to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-finals, setting up a match against either Algeria or DR Congo. The Super Eagles, runners-up in the 2023 tournament, displayed strong form throughout the group stage and continued their dominance in Fes on Monday.

Ademola Lookman, Victor Osimhen (twice), and Akor Adams all scored in the victory. A brief disagreement between Osimhen and Lookman occurred during Osimhen’s substitution, potentially signaling underlying tensions within the squad.

Attack’s Growing Chemistry

Nigeria’s front three of Lookman, Osimhen, and Adams appear to be developing a strong partnership. Adams provided two assists, one for Lookman and one for Osimhen, before scoring his first goal of the tournament. Lookman reciprocated with assists for Adams and Osimhen, contributing to all four of Nigeria’s goals. The players share a tenacity that drives their collective performance, consistently striving to gain possession in the final third.

Iwobi’s Pivotal Role

While Osimhen and Lookman received significant attention for their goals, Alex Iwobi’s performance was also crucial. The Fulham midfielder has demonstrated consistent playmaking ability, initiating several key attacks against Mozambique. He provided incisive through balls leading to Nigeria’s first three goals, including a perfectly-weighted pass from inside his own half to Lookman. Iwobi’s box-to-box role and creative freedom have made him integral to Nigeria’s gameplay.

Championship Potential

Nigeria’s performance against Mozambique strongly suggests they are contenders for the tournament title. Their dominance is often linked to their mental focus rather than the opposition’s tactics. The team has displayed elegant defensive efforts from Calvin Bassey and a sense of composure orchestrated by Iwobi. With seven different players scoring so far, Nigeria’s team morale is high, sending a message to opponents about their scoring potential.
