NJBIA Responds to Supreme Court Decision on Trump Tariffs

A recent Supreme Court decision has limited the authority of the President to impose international tariffs. The ruling addresses the use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) in relation to tariffs initiated by former President Donald Trump.
Impact on New Jersey Businesses
Michele Siekerka, President and CEO of the New Jersey Business and Industry Association (NJBIA), stated that tariffs have created short-term cost increases for businesses in New Jersey, despite potential long-term benefits for some manufacturers. One New Jersey manufacturer, in operation for over a century, recently announced layoffs affecting 140 workers, reportedly due to the economic pressures.
Findings from the NJBIA Business Outlook Survey
The NJBIA’s annual Business Outlook Survey indicated that 49% of respondents anticipated tariffs would impact their supply chains in 2025. Among those affected, 88% reported increased prices from their supply chains. Furthermore, 81% of respondents expressed a lack of confidence in their ability to absorb rising input costs without passing them on to consumers.
Uncertainty and Economic Effects
Siekerka noted that fluctuating federal tariff policies create unpredictability and uncertainty for New Jersey businesses. This uncertainty can lead to businesses postponing investments, halting hiring, and potentially relocating operations to more cost-effective locations.

The Supreme Court ruling may lessen some cost pressures for affected businesses. The NJBIA hopes the decision will encourage dialogue and collaboration between industry and lawmakers to bolster the national economy while safeguarding New Jersey employers.
