Support Black-Owned Businesses in California

Supporting Black-owned businesses is increasingly recognized as a way to promote racial equality. Financial support, beyond mere acknowledgment, is considered crucial for fostering a more just and equitable society.
Many California destinations and media outlets have compiled lists of Black-owned shops and restaurants to encourage patronage. Resources are available throughout the state, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Orange County, Fresno, and Sacramento.
Northern California
African American Expressions, located in Sacramento, is the world’s largest Black-owned gift and greeting card company. The store offers a wide selection of culturally authentic gifts, including calendars, greeting cards, figurines, and art pieces.
Marcus Books, Oakland’s oldest Black-owned bookstore, has experienced increased business as people seek resources to learn about racial issues. The bookstore serves as a venue for Black authors and a forum for community discussions.
The McBride Sisters Collection, based in Oakland, is the world’s largest African American–owned wine company. Robin and Andréa McBride created the company after reconnecting and offer wines such as the Black Girl Magic collection and the She Can canned wine series, celebrating the flavors of New Zealand and California’s Central Coast.
Miyako Old Fashion Ice Cream, in San Francisco, is the city’s only Black-owned ice cream parlor. Operated by Thomas and Teresa Bennett for 30 years, the shop’s bestselling flavor is Cookies and Cream.
Fingersnaps Media Arts, in San Francisco’s Mission District, provides a creative workspace where DJ Lamont teaches individuals of all ages and skill levels to explore the art of DJing.
Gumbo Social, also in the Mission District, blends traditional soul food with a modern touch, offering hearty and comforting dishes that celebrate culture and community.
Laurel Burch Studios, in Berkeley, sells wares inspired by the late artist and businesswoman Laura Burch. The shop, run by her daughter Aarin, features jewelry, ceramics, apparel, and other items showcasing Burch’s unique style.
Outdoor Afro, founded in Oakland, is a network dedicated to connecting Black communities with nature. The organization leads activities such as kayaking, fishing, and hiking, and aims to motivate 50,000 people to spend time outdoors for 2.5 hours on Juneteenth.
Central California
Alavina Skin Care, in Arroyo Grande, offers a skin care line featuring organic, cold-pressed oils from watermelon, pomegranate, and other natural ingredients.
Dr. Jacques Charles Aesthetics, Health & Wellness Institute, in Santa Barbara, provides massage therapy, nutritional counseling, and other health and wellness services.
Hush-Harbor Artisan Bakery & Café, in Atascadero, specializes in artisan breads and pastries. The bakery-café offers food and local wines in a setting featuring jazz music.
Smobbin 559, in Fresno, showcases the dynamic artwork of native James Graham, who transitioned from a career as a probation officer to a full-time artist.
Southern California
Octavia’s Bookshelf, in Pasadena, is an independent bookstore and community hub specializing in works by Black authors and voices from the African diaspora.
Obet & Del’s Coffee, in Los Angeles’ Thai Town, is a Black- and Filipino-owned coffee shop known for its retro decor and creative coffee specialties. The shop participates in the Fifteen Percent Pledge, dedicating 15 percent of its shelf space to Black-owned brands.
Charles Wine Company, based in Los Angeles, features a portfolio of premium wines under three labels. The family-owned business uses grapes including Zinfandel, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Dulan’s Soul Food Kitchen, in Inglewood, is led by owner Adolf Dulan, known as the “King of Soul.” He serves traditional soul food dishes.
Jendayi Collection, in Los Angeles, is a jewelry retailer specializing in culturally inspired custom wedding rings and fine jewelry.
Rock City Climbing, in Anaheim, is an indoor climbing facility that serves as a community gathering place for climbers of all levels.
Stuzo Clothing, a Los Angeles brand, creates clothing for non-conforming and gender-free customers.
Chula Vista Brewery, in San Diego County, is the only Black-owned brewery in the area, known for its creative small-batch beers and welcoming atmosphere.
