Support Black-Owned Businesses This Holiday Shopping Season

Written by on January 7, 2026

Several activist groups are organizing economic blackouts this Black Friday and into early December, urging Americans to refrain from spending at major corporations. The campaigns aim to redirect consumer spending towards independent businesses.

Multiple organizations, including The People’s Union USA, No Kings, and Blackout the System, are coordinating these efforts. Each group has specific targets while sharing a broader message about corporate influence.

Targeted Corporations

No Kings, as part of the “We Ain’t Buying It” campaign, is focusing on companies they allege have negatively impacted diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives or immigrant rights. Their list includes Target, Home Depot, and Amazon. The People’s Union USA is advocating for a spending freeze at large retail chains to support local economies and smaller businesses. Blackout the System is promoting a complete avoidance of major corporate spending, extending to services like streaming subscriptions, as a statement against existing economic systems.

Alternative Shopping Options

BIN has compiled a guide to direct consumers toward independent Black-owned brands. The guide identifies businesses considered “boycott-safe,” allowing shoppers to make purchases directly without supporting major retailers.
