Support Black-Owned Businesses This Holiday Shopping Season

Written by on January 9, 2026

Several activist groups are organizing economic blackouts this Black Friday and into early December, encouraging Americans to refrain from spending at major corporations. The campaigns aim to redirect consumer spending towards independent businesses.

Multiple organizations are coordinating these efforts, each with a specific focus while sharing a broader message about corporate influence.

Targeted Corporations

No Kings, as part of the “We Ain’t Buying It” campaign, is urging consumers to avoid companies they allege have negatively impacted diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives or immigrant rights. Target, Home Depot, and Amazon are among the companies being targeted. The People’s Union USA is advocating for a spending freeze at large retail chains to support local economies and smaller businesses. Blackout the System is promoting a complete halt to spending at major corporations, including canceling subscriptions to streaming services, as a statement against existing economic systems.

Alternative Shopping Options

BIN has compiled a guide to direct consumers to independent Black-owned brands for holiday shopping. The guide identifies businesses considered “boycott-safe,” allowing consumers to make purchases directly without supporting major retailers.
