Symphony meets hip-hop in inspiring Templars Square fundraiser

An orchestra and a hip-hop artist took to the stage in a powerful musical collaboration.

The performance took place at Templars Square Shopping Centre in Cowley on Monday (May 18), to raise funds and awareness for The Jungle, a community hub known as a ‘community living room’ that fosters connection and resilience.

Sixty-six musicians from the Wheaton College Symphony Orchestra performed alongside local hip-hop artist BENZA, who shared his personal journey through addiction recovery and rehabilitation during the event.

The performance attracted a large crowd of shoppers and residents who stopped to listen.

Benza said: “Without the support of Adapt and The Jungle, I simply wouldn’t be here today.”

The event was supported by Templars Square management, who helped ensure its smooth and safe delivery in the busy public space.

Councillor Malik praised the event and The Jungle’s mission.

He said: “This is what we need to see more of, people working together for the benefit of the local community.”

Among those in attendance was Moira Darlington, the upcoming High Sheriff of Oxford.

She said: “What a triumph this morning was! Well done on a magnificent achievement. There was such a great atmosphere and ALL ages seemed to be present and thoroughly enjoying classical music.”

The collaboration was covered live by BBC Radio Oxford and brought together a diverse audience of supporters, shoppers, and passersby.

Organisers extended their thanks to everyone involved in making the day a success.
