This Day in Hip-Hop and R&B History: June 20

One influential artist born on this day in 1949 is American R&B singer Lionel Richie. He rose to prominence as the lead vocalist for the Motown group The Commodores, with whom he released nine albums during the ’70s and early ’80s. Richie has also had a prolific solo career, releasing 10 albums as a solo artist, including three that reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200: Can’t Slow Down (1983), Dancing on the Ceiling (1986), and Tuskegee (2012).

It spawned the moderate hit “I Like It (I Wanna Be Where You Are),” which reached No. 21 on the Hot Rap Songs chart, No. 68 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, and No. 91 on the Billboard Hot 100. Cultural Milestones

June 20 has witnessed significant cultural achievements in hip-hop and R&B.

  • 1988: MCA Records released landmark albums by two of its most promising young R&B acts: Heart Break by New Edition and Don’t Be Cruel by Bobby Brown. Heart Break peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard 200 and No. 3 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, while Don’t Be Cruel topped both charts.
  • 1992: Sage the Gemini was born in San Francisco, California. He first came to prominence in 2013 with the singles “Red Nose” and “Gas Pedal,” both released in March. The former reached No. 52 on the Billboard Hot 100, while the latter peaked at No. 29, making it his first top 40 hit in the US.
  • 2002: Harlem rapper SugarHill Keem was born. One of the most promising rappers in the New York drill scene, he is known for tracks such as “Move Look,” “Ice Cream Truck,” and “Flock at the Flockas.”
  • 2003: R&B and soul icon Lionel Richie was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on his 54th birthday. His star is located at 6255 Sunset Blvd.

Industry Changes and Challenges

The industry has also witnessed several low moments on this date.

  • 2006: American R&B musician Claydes Charles Smith passed away at 57 after a long illness. As the co-founder and lead guitarist of the legendary band Kool & the Gang, he co-wrote several of their biggest hits, such as “Love & Understanding (Come Together),” released in 1976, and “Take My Heart (You Can Have It If You Want It),” released in 1981.
  • 2017: Prodigy, one-half of the influential New York rap duo Mobb Deep, died at the age of 42 following a lifelong battle with sickle cell anemia. Widely regarded as one of New York’s most respected MCs, he released eight albums with Havoc as Mobb Deep and five as a solo artist.

June 20 is a date that’s forever etched in the memories of hip-hop and R&B fans — and for good reason. It has ushered in numerous legendary albums, marked the celebration of a legendary artist receiving one of Hollywood’s highest honors, and sadly, witnessed the untimely deaths of a pioneering MC and a founding member of one of R&B’s most iconic groups.
