Tracking technology may curb gun violence in South Africa

The South African Police Service (SAPS) regularly reports on anti-crime operations, often citing significant arrest numbers and firearms seized. SAPS reports indicate that an average of 1,800 government-issued firearms are lost or stolen annually. Over the past five years, more than 3,400 SAPS firearms have been reported missing, with only 559 subsequently recovered. Between late 2023 and early 2024, 371 police firearms and 17 assault rifles were lost, alongside 29,128 rounds of ammunition. These missing weapons are believed to contribute to illicit markets and equip criminals with high-caliber firearms.
Current Management Practices
The SAPS currently relies on paper trails, bi-annual inspections, and firearm retention cords to manage its arsenal. These methods are considered to have limitations, as paper records do not guarantee firearm location and retention cords can be compromised.

The system provides real-time visibility of firearms via a secure cloud platform, allowing commanders to track location and status, and detect discharge events.
