U.S. Official Visits Kenya to Discuss Security and Trade

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau is scheduled to visit Kenya from January 24 to February 1. This visit occurs nearly three months after a planned trip by Vice President JD Vance was cancelled due to a U.S. government shutdown.

Landau’s trip to Africa, alongside Commander of U.S. Africa Command General Dagvin Anderson, also includes stops in Egypt, Ethiopia, and Djibouti.

Kenya Visit

During his time in Kenya, Landau will meet with government officials to discuss commercial engagement, counter-terrorism cooperation, and Kenya’s contributions to security efforts in Haiti. Discussions are also expected to cover broader regional issues affecting East Africa and U.S.-Kenya strategic interests, including trade and security. As of the time of publication, the Kenyan government had not confirmed whether Landau would hold joint media addresses with top officials, including President William Ruto.

Previous Visit Cancellation

A planned visit by Vice President Vance in November 2023 was cancelled. Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi stated that President Trump directed no U.S. official to attend the G20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, which made the subsequent Kenya leg of the trip infeasible. Mudavadi assured the public that the bilateral relationship would not be affected by the cancellation. Vance’s trip would have been the first official visit to Kenya by a high-ranking U.S. executive since President Trump’s return to the White House.

Reaffirming U.S.-Kenya Ties

Landau’s visit is intended to reaffirm U.S.-Kenya ties, particularly in economic and security matters. Key talks are expected to focus on creating a favorable environment for U.S. investment and deepening collaboration in addressing regional threats. This visit follows President Ruto’s December trip to Washington, where he met with President Trump and finalized several key agreements, including a U.S.-Kenya health deal aimed at strengthening Kenya’s healthcare infrastructure.

Other Stops on the Itinerary

In Cairo, Landau will engage with U.S. companies operating in Egypt and meet government officials to discuss regional cooperation and strengthening economic relations.

In Addis Ababa, Landau will meet with Ethiopian government officials, including Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, to promote commercial engagement and address regional peace and security. He will also meet with African Union Commission Chair Mahmoud Ali Youssouf to discuss shared priorities, including humanitarian challenges.

In Djibouti, Landau will focus on security and counterterrorism cooperation as well as commercial partnerships.
