Adinkra Fellowship Seeks Leaders from Africa and Diaspora

Written by on January 19, 2026

The Adinkra Fellowship is a leadership program designed to empower rising leaders aged 40 and under from African nations and the African diaspora. The program aims to foster connections and collaboration between these communities, driving transformative change globally.

About the Adinkra Fellowship

The Adinkra Fellowship unites and empowers exceptional rising leaders from Africa and its diaspora. Fellows are selected based on their achievements, passion, and values that inspire transformative change. The fellowship focuses on bridging divides, transforming communities, and shaping a better future through immersive trips, leadership programs, and collaborative initiatives. The name “Adinkra” derives from Ghanaian Adinkra symbols representing integrity, resilience, and unity, reflecting the fellowship’s core mission.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be 40 years of age or under and from either one of Africa’s 54 countries or the global African Diaspora, including African American, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latinx, and Black Canadian communities. The fellowship welcomes individuals from diverse sectors, including business, technology and innovation, arts and culture, civil society, and public service.

Fellowship Program Components

The Adinkra Fellowship program includes several key components. Fellows will participate in two week-long international trips—one to an African country and another to a country with a strong African heritage. These trips include discussions on Africa and the Diaspora, mentorship programs, “Meet the Leader” sessions, visits to cultural landmarks and innovative organizations, skills-building workshops, and an awards ceremony. Expenses for the trips are covered, and fellows receive a $1,500 travel stipend.

Other components include group projects, a tour of key educational institutions to connect with academic leaders, and ongoing alumni events to foster continued engagement and collaboration.

Selection Process

The selection process begins with an open call for applications and nominations. A dedicated jury reviews applications to ensure a transparent and fair process. The inaugural Adinkra Fellowship in 2026 will select 20 to 40 rising leaders.

Impact and Legacy

The Adinkra Fellowship builds on the legacy of the Africa 35.35 Awards, which recognized outstanding youth under 35 in Africa. The fellowship aims to engage over 2,000 applications, involve 110+ jury members, reach millions through media coverage, and cultivate a community of rising leaders committed to transformative action.

Application Information

Applications are accepted during the open call period, requiring details about an applicant’s background, achievements, and vision for positive change. The application deadline is July 3, 2025. Interested individuals can apply at https://www.adinkrafellowship.com/.
