Amnesty International Australia’s Human Rights Agenda outlines the key human rights priorities we are calling on the Albanese Government to advance, both at home and globally.
In Australia, we call for addressing the underlying causes of the high rate of incarceration of Indigenous children and tackling climate change and respecting human rights. Globally, we urge Australia to demonstrate principled leadership in responding to some of the world’s most pressing human rights crises, including the repression of Tibetans, Uyghurs and Hong Kongers under the Chinese Government, the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan, the ongoing atrocities in Myanmar, and genocide and grave violations of international law in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
As a middle power with strong regional relationships, Australia has both the opportunity and the responsibility to champion universal human rights. Human rights must be applied consistently regardless of political alliances, economic interests or strategic considerations. Selective application undermines international institutions, emboldens abusive governments and ultimately makes the world less safe.
