Ugandan long-distance star Joshua Cheptegei is set to make a highly anticipated return to South Africa when he headlines the RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10Km on Sunday July 12, raising expectations of a record-breaking performance in one of Africa’s premier road races.
The reigning world record holder over both 5,000m and 10,000m will lead a strong international field in Durban, with organisers hoping the event could become the most competitive 10km race ever staged on the continent.
Cheptegei’s return to Durban carries special significance. The Olympic and world champion enjoyed one of the defining moments of his career in the coastal city in 2018, when he claimed victory in 27:16 and set a South African All-Comers record.
Reflecting on that race, the Ugandan said it came at a crucial stage of his journey after recovering from injury.
“South Africa has always been a special place for me to compete. There is something unique about racing on African soil, and Durban in particular has an incredible atmosphere, rich culture, and passionate people,” Cheptegei said.
“That race helped restore my confidence and reinforced my belief that I could compete at the highest level. It played an important role in shaping the athlete I became.”
The 28-year-old went on to enjoy an outstanding season in 2018, including breaking the 15km world record, before establishing himself as one of the greatest distance runners in history.
Now, with a personal best of 26:38 over 10km, Cheptegei returns to Durban with the possibility of becoming the first athlete to run under 27 minutes on African soil.
Despite the excitement surrounding the prospect, the Ugandan remains focused on delivering a strong performance rather than chasing records.
“It would be an honour to see history made on African soil, but my focus is simply on running a good race, enjoying the experience, and celebrating the sport with the people of Durban,” he said.
Event founder and Stillwater Sports Managing Director Michael Meyer described Cheptegei’s participation as a major boost for African athletics.
“Joshua is one of the greatest distance runners of all time and arguably the finest 10km runner of his generation. To welcome him back to Durban is incredibly special,” Meyer said.
He added that Cheptegei’s confirmation is only the first step in assembling what organisers believe could be the strongest 10km field ever seen in Africa.
“This is only the first of a series of announcements that will result in what we believe to be the greatest 10km race ever staged on the continent,” Meyer noted.
According to organisers, Cheptegei’s presence is expected to inspire both elite and aspiring runners across Africa while showcasing the continent’s growing status as a global hub for distance running.
