East Africa to Host Historic Tri-Nation AFCON

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will proceed as scheduled in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, according to the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Recent reports suggesting a potential postponement to 2028 have been dismissed.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe addressed media speculation following a CAF Executive Committee meeting in Dar es Salaam, reaffirming the commitment to hosting the tournament in East Africa.
Tournament Scheduling and Significance
The tournament is currently slated for June and July 2027, intentionally preceding Kenya’s general elections in August. This edition of AFCON holds historical significance as the first time the tournament will be jointly hosted by three nations, operating under the “East Africa Pamoja” initiative. It also marks the 70th anniversary of the competition and will be the final AFCON held on a biennial schedule before a transition to a quadrennial format in 2028.
Qualification and Tournament Format
Qualification for the 2027 AFCON involves all 54 CAF member associations. The three host nations—Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda—have already secured their participation. Preliminary rounds are planned from March to November 2026, culminating in a 24-team finals lineup. Detailed schedules and fixtures are expected to be released after venue inspections and final logistical arrangements are completed.
Logistical Preparations and CAF Support
CAF will collaborate closely with the three host nations to ensure that stadiums, transport networks, hotels, and other operational logistics meet the confederation’s standards. Preparations are underway, including stadium inspections, upgrades to training facilities, and coordination with local authorities regarding security and transportation.
Officiating Integrity and Development Initiatives
CAF is investing in referee development and VAR training to enhance officiating integrity. This initiative follows criticism related to the 2025 AFCON final in Morocco. CAF views the 2027 AFCON as an opportunity to strengthen football across East Africa, boost youth development programs, expand fan engagement, and create lasting infrastructure benefits for the host nations.
