Violence-for-Hire: International Task Force Nets 280 Arrests in First Year
THE HAGUE, Netherlands – A concerning trend is emerging across Europe: criminals are increasingly utilizing a “gig economy” model, hiring individuals – often young people – through social media and messaging apps to carry out violent acts. Europol, the European Union’s police agency, revealed that an international task force dedicated to combating this phenomenon has made 280 arrests in its inaugural year.
This disturbing development highlights a shift in criminal activity, moving beyond isolated incidents and local disputes. Europol describes violence as increasingly being “offered as a service,” readily accessible, scalable, and facilitated by online platforms that enable recruitment, coordination, and execution across international borders.
Established last year, the task force comprises law enforcement agencies from Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. In its first 12 months, the group has identified over 1,400 individuals linked to violence-as-a-service networks.
Notable Arrests and Investigations:
The task force’s efforts have yielded several significant arrests, including:
- Germany Explosions: A Dutch national is accused of acting as a getaway driver for two minors allegedly responsible for a series of explosions in Germany during July and August 2025.
- Sweden Prison Shooting: A minor was arrested in Sweden in January, suspected of involvement in a shooting outside a prison in Alphen aan den Rijn, Netherlands.
European Most Wanted List:
Europol has also added three individuals to its European Most Wanted list, all suspected of playing key roles in violence-as-a-service networks. The individuals, two from Sweden and one from Germany, are wanted for alleged involvement in serious crimes including murder, drug trafficking, and money laundering.
