Historic Scottish Bakery, Alexander Taylor, Changes Hands After 200 Years of Family Tradition

Strathaven, South Lanarkshire – A beloved Scottish institution, Alexander Taylor Bakery in Strathaven, has been sold to a US businessman, marking the end of an era for the family-run business that has operated for over 200 years. The bakery, widely considered Scotland’s oldest, was established in 1820 and has been meticulously managed by six generations of the Taylor family.

Carlos Huerta, an entrepreneur from California, is relocating from Los Angeles to South Lanarkshire to take ownership of the bakery. He expressed his deep connection to the business, stating, “Alexander Taylor is more than a bakery; it is a piece of living Scottish heritage. From the moment I came across this business, I felt a real connection to what it represents: genuine craft, community, and a story that has been carefully preserved across generations.”

Huerta is committed to preserving the bakery’s legacy while also aiming for ambitious growth. “My commitment is to protect that legacy and build on it, keeping the heart of the business exactly where it belongs, in Strathaven. But the goal is no longer just to be one of the oldest – it’s to become one of the most well-known bakeries in the UK.”

Barry and Claire Taylor, who have overseen the bakery since 1997, will remain in a consultancy role to ensure a smooth transition for staff, customers, and suppliers. They shared, “Handing over something that has been in our family for so long was never going to be an easy decision. But knowing that Alexander Taylor is passing to someone who genuinely cares about what it stands for, and who is committed to its future in this community, makes it the right one.” The couple plans to dedicate more time to their artistic pursuits.

The sale was handled by Business Partnership, a national firm specializing in independent business transactions. Cameron Young, a partner at the firm, highlighted the unique appeal of Alexander Taylor Bakery. “This is a genuinely special business with a story that resonated with buyers from across the world. Carlos stood out not just because of his commercial credentials, but because of his passion for Scotland and his respect for what the Taylors have created here. It was clear from early conversations that he wasn’t looking to reinvent Alexander Taylor, he was looking to steward it – exactly what this business deserves.”

For over two centuries, Alexander Taylor Bakery has been a cornerstone of Strathaven, providing the community with handmade breads, traditional Scottish bakes, delectable patisserie, and savory treats. Currently employing 26 individuals, the bakery attracts both loyal local customers and visitors to the town’s historic center. The bakery was first put up for sale last year, a significant event after more than 200 years of family ownership.
