Kenya’s athletics stars will be out to stamp their authority on the global stage when the Wanda Diamond League heads to Monaco on Friday, with world champions Faith Kipyegon, Emmanuel Wanyonyi and steeplechase sensation Edmund Serem leading a strong Kenyan contingent at the season’s 10th meeting.

Fresh from another record-breaking meeting in Eugene last weekend, the prestigious Monaco stop brings together Olympic and world champions in one of the most competitive meetings on the athletics calendar.

Much of the spotlight will be on three-time Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon, who returns to competition in the women’s 3000m after suffering a rare defeat at the Prefontaine Classic.

The world record holder in both the 1500m and the mile finished behind American Nikki Hiltz and fellow Kenyan Dorcus Ewoi in the mile in Eugene, before revealing she had been competing with a hamstring injury.

Monaco now presents an opportunity for the Kenyan superstar to continue her recovery while testing herself against another world-class field.

Kipyegon, widely regarded as the greatest women’s middle-distance runner in history, boasts world records of 3:48.68 in the 1500m and 4:07.64 in the mile.

She also produced the fastest mile ever run by a woman during the Breaking4 exhibition, although that performance was not eligible for world record ratification due to pacing and technological assistance.

The 31-year-old will face a formidable field featuring fellow Kenyan Agnes Jebet Ngetich, Ethiopia’s Aleshign Baweke, Australia’s Jess Hull and several other elite distance runners.

The women’s 3000m will also provide another opportunity for Kipyegon to continue exploring longer distances as she works towards her long-term ambition of eventually competing in the marathon.

Wanyonyi, an Olympic and world 800m champion, will also be among the headline acts when he steps up to the men’s 1000m.

The world number one arrives in Monaco after an outstanding season and returns to the venue where he set a meeting record of 1:41.44 in the 800m last year.

He renews his rivalry with Algeria’s Olympic and world medallist Djamel Sedjati, while Spain’s world leader Mohamed Attaoui, Britain’s former world 1500m champion Jake Wightman, American Bryce Hoppel, Ben Pattison and France’s Gabriel Tual complete a high-quality field.

Kenya will also have strong representation in the men’s 3000m steeplechase led by world number two Edmund Serem, alongside Amos Serem, Leonard Kipkemoi Bett, Abraham Kibiwot, Simon Koech, Wilberforce Chemiat Kones and Cornelius Kipkosgei Konor.

In the men’s 5000m, Cornelius Kemboi and Jacob Krop will carry Kenya’s hopes against a strong international line-up.

Africa’s top athletes will also feature prominently across the programme.

Botswana’s world number one Busang Collen Kebinatshipi headlines the men’s 400m after victories in Xiamen, Paris and Eugene and will look to extend his unbeaten Diamond League run. South Africa’s Zakithi Nene, Britain’s Matt Hudson-Smith and American Jacory Patterson are expected to provide stiff competition.

The men’s 100m features Botswana Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo and Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme, while Ethiopia has a formidable contingent in the women’s 3000m led by Aleshign Baweke, Bernesh Dessie, Senayet Getachew, Freweyni Hailu, Birke Haylom and Yenenesh Shimket.

Morocco’s Salah Eddine Ben Yazide lines up in the men’s steeplechase, while Ethiopia’s Khairi Bejiga and Biniam Mehary contest the men’s 5000m.

Field events will include South Africa’s Jo-Ane du Plessis in the women’s javelin and Senegal’s Saly Sarr in the women’s triple jump.

The Monaco meeting is the 10th stop of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League season, which began in Shanghai/Keqiao in May and will conclude with the two-day series final in Brussels on 4–5 September.
