Geva Theatre’s production of “The Woman in Black” elicited strong reactions from audience members during its opening performance Tuesday night. One attendee reportedly expressed a desire to confront the performer during a particularly startling moment.
The play, adapted by Stephen Mallatratt from Susan Hill’s 1983 Gothic horror novel, is a long-running production with a history spanning the West End and Off-Broadway. It is the second-longest running play in West End history, behind Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap,” and the longest-running ghost story. A 2012 film adaptation starring Daniel Radcliffe also exists.
Plot Summary
The story centers on aging lawyer Arthur Kipps, portrayed by David Acton, who was previously sent to a rural English town to settle the estate of a deceased recluse. Strange occurrences at the widow’s funeral lead him to uncover a disturbing darkness within the town. Years later, Kipps enlists an actor, played by Ben Porter, to help him recount the story, forming the basis of the play’s narrative. James Byng also appears as a rotating third actor.
