Kenya Urged to Improve Air Connectivity to Unlock Tourism Growth
Speaking in Nairobi, World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) President and CEO Gloria Guevara said Africa’s tourism sector outperformed the global economy last year, growing by 5 per cent and contributing a record US$226 billion (KSh 29 trillion) to the continent’s economy. She identified easier visa policies, seamless airport experiences, investment readiness, product diversification and stronger connectivity as key drivers of tourism growth across Africa. “We should not need to go to the north to come to the south. Africa needs to have more connectivity,” she added.

Ggoobi: Nationwide Trade Order Restoration is Strategy for Economic Transformation
The Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Treasury (PSST) Ramathan Ggoobi has defended the ongoing trade order enforcement across the country, saying it is a strategy to transform the economy. He argues that organised business practices are essential for Uganda’s economic transformation and for attracting investment. Speaking at the 2026 Absa Post-Budget Forum, Ggoobi said Uganda’s next phase of economic growth will depend not only on increased public spending but also on implementing reforms to improve accountability, efficiency, trade order, and tax compliance.

EU Investment Boosts Tanzania’s Agricultural Exports through Modern Plant Health Systems
Tanzania’s ambitions to expand agricultural exports and secure greater access to high-value international markets are receiving a significant boost through investments in modern plant health systems, supported by the European Union (EU) under the Strengthening Phytosanitary Capacity in Tanzania (STREPHIT) project. The initiative, funded by the EU and implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with the Government of Tanzania, aims to strengthen the country’s phytosanitary infrastructure, improve pest surveillance and diagnostic systems, and ensure compliance with international trade requirements.

Rwanda Now Supplies 20% of US Tungsten Demand
Rwanda’s largest mining company, Trinity Metals, said exports from its Nyakabingo Tungsten Mine now account for up to 20 per cent of the United States’ monthly consumption of primary tungsten concentrate. In a statement on Wednesday, June 17, the company said that more than 320 tonnes of high-grade tungsten concentrate have been shipped from Rwanda to the US since a commercial supply arrangement involving US-based Global Tungsten & Powders (GTP) and Trinity Metals’ offtake partner and commodities trader Traxys was launched in August 2025.

Bishoftu International Airport to Propel Ethiopia into Global Aviation Leadership
The new Bishoftu International Airport, under construction about 40 kilometres southeast of Addis Ababa, is set to become one of the world’s largest aviation hubs and a transformative milestone in Ethiopia’s development. Designed to handle up to 110 million passengers annually upon full completion of its master plan, the airport will have a capacity approximately 4.4 times greater than the current Bole International Airport. Construction is advancing around the clock, underscoring the strategic importance of a project that is expected to redefine Ethiopia’s role in global air transport. Once operational, the airport will significantly expand passenger and cargo capacity, strengthen regional and international connectivity, and further establish Ethiopia as a key gateway linking Africa with the rest of the world.

Sudan, Azerbaijan Central Banks Sign MoU to Boost Banking Cooperation
The Governor of the Central Bank of Sudan, Amna Mirghani, and her Azerbaijani counterpart, Taleh Kazimov, signed a memorandum of understanding for banking cooperation in Baku on Wednesday. Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the agreement aligns with the central bank’s efforts to open up to the international financial system and reintegrate into global banking networks. Mirghani emphasised the importance of historical ties between Sudan and Azerbaijan, noting that the MoU opens new horizons for economic and trade cooperation, particularly in expanding import and export opportunities.

Somalia Receives Modern Equipment from Türkiye to Boost Farming
Somalia received modern equipment from the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) on Sunday to strengthen and modernise the operations of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation. The Turkish support will enhance institutional efficiency, accelerate service delivery and help Somalia achieve food self-sufficiency, Somali Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Mohamed Abdi Hayir Mareye said in a statement. “I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to TIKA, the development agency of our brotherly nation, the Republic of Türkiye, for delivering today the first phase of their response,” the minister said after the handover ceremony in the capital, Mogadishu. He said the request was presented to TIKA President Abdullahi Eren during a meeting held in Ankara in 2025. The delivered support equipment includes computers, printers, and television screens.
