Ethiopian Airlines celebrated one year of its direct flight service between Atlanta and Addis Ababa on May 17. The flight serves as a vital link, connecting Atlanta and the broader Southeast United States with Africa and facilitating connections for the African diaspora community.

Ethiopian Airlines’ direct flight from Atlanta to Addis Ababa launched a year ago and aims to provide access to over 64 African destinations and more than 136 international destinations worldwide. Solomon Mekonnen Fanta, Ethiopian Airlines Traffic and Sales Manager for the Southeast USA, noted that prior to this flight, Atlanta had only two direct routes to Africa. The airline intends to increase the frequency of flights in the future, recognizing the significant potential for growth between Atlanta and Africa, as well as the Middle East. Currently, the flight operates four times weekly, and there is hope for daily service.
Community Response
The flight has been met with enthusiasm from various African diaspora communities in Atlanta. Representatives from Cameroon, Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda, and Eritrea have expressed their appreciation for the service, viewing it as an airline “by our own and for us.” The flight fosters a sense of unity and pride among these communities, allowing easier travel to their home countries and promoting connections with other parts of the continent. It has also encouraged African Americans in the Southeast to consider “homecoming” trips to Africa.
