THE HAGUE, Netherlands – A concerning trend is emerging across Europe: criminals are increasingly utilizing a “gig economy” model, hiring individuals – often young people – through social media and messaging apps to carry out violent acts. Europol, the European Union’s police agency, revealed that an international task force dedicated to combating this phenomenon has made 280 arrests in its inaugural year.
This disturbing development highlights a shift in criminal activity, moving beyond isolated incidents and local disputes. Europol describes violence as increasingly being “offered as a service,” readily accessible, scalable, and facilitated by online platforms that enable recruitment, coordination, and execution across international borders.
Established last year, the task force comprises law enforcement agencies from Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. In its first 12 months, the group has identified over 1,400 individuals linked to violence-as-a-service networks.
Notable Arrests and Investigations:
The task force’s efforts have yielded several significant arrests, including:
European Most Wanted List:
Europol has also added three individuals to its European Most Wanted list, all suspected of playing key roles in violence-as-a-service networks. The individuals, two from Sweden and one from Germany, are wanted for alleged involvement in serious crimes including murder, drug trafficking, and money laundering.
Combating the Growing Threat:
The rise of violence-as-a-service presents a significant challenge to law enforcement agencies across Europe. The international task force’s success in its first year demonstrates the importance of cross-border collaboration in tackling this evolving criminal trend and protecting citizens from harm. Europol continues to monitor and investigate these networks, working to disrupt their operations and bring perpetrators to justice.
