Riehata Seeks Filipino Dancers for Stella Dance Jam, A Celebration of Japan-Philippines Friendship

MANILA, Philippines – Renowned Filipino-Japanese choreographer Riehata, known for her work with global music icons like BTS, TWICE, and BLACKPINK’s Lisa, is now searching for talented dancers in the Philippines to join her on stage. This exciting opportunity comes as part of the Stella Dance Jam, a two-day dance event celebrating the upcoming 2026 Japan-Philippines Friendship Year.

Presented by The Japan Foundation, Manila, Stella Dance Jam will be held at The Theatre at Solaire on June 20 and 21. Riehata will be working alongside “The Stellas,” a group of young dancers selected through auditions in both the Philippines and Japan.

Auditions to be Held in Davao and Manila

The Filipino leg of the free auditions will take place on April 25 in Davao City, chosen for its significant historical and cultural ties to Japan, and on April 26 in Manila.

Ben Suzuki, director of The Japan Foundation, Manila, shared that they’ve already received a substantial number of applications, with an estimated 200 from the Philippines and 80 from Japan.

Looking for Passion and Energy

Riehata expressed her enthusiasm for the auditions, stating, “I’m looking for [people with] good energy, who really love dance, and who really have passion.” She emphasized that talent is the key factor, stating, “Everyone [with talent] has a chance, and I want to give everyone a chance.”

This initiative marks a shift for Riehata, who typically works with professional dance groups. She explained her desire to platform emerging dancers, particularly those outside of Metro Manila, providing them with a valuable opportunity to showcase their skills.

Expanding Opportunities for Filipino Dancers

Riehata and Suzuki envision this as just the beginning, with plans to expand their reach to cities in the Visayas and Mindanao regions. Riehata also expressed interest in training younger dancers, recalling a memorable experience with a 70-year-old student at her dance studio in Japan.

Paying tribute to her Filipino heritage, Riehata dedicated her artistry to her Cebuano single mother, who instilled in her a love for dance and music. Despite growing up in Japan, she proudly maintains a strong connection to her Filipino roots, stating, “I only speak Japanese and English, but I have a Filipino spirit.” This sentiment underscores her mission to discover and highlight the country’s rising dance stars.
