Kenyan football loses its voice as iconic commentator Diblo dies

The Kenyan football fraternity has been plunged into mourning following the death of celebrated Radio Jambo football commentator Paul Kimani Kaberia, fondly known to millions as Diblo.

Diblo breathed his last early Sunday morning while undergoing treatment at Ruaraka Uhai Neema Hospital after a short illness, bringing the curtain down on a distinguished broadcasting career that made him one of the most iconic voices in Kenyan sports media.

Blessed with a distinctive delivery, razor-sharp humour and an unrelenting passion for football, Diblo carved out a special place in the hearts of fans across the country.

His vibrant storytelling and trademark “Taaaarifa!” battle cry transformed football commentary into gripping theatre, electrifying listeners and cementing his status as a household name.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) led the nation in paying tribute to the revered commentator, describing him as one of the defining voices of Kenyan football.

“Diblo’s voice became synonymous with Kenyan football, bringing matches to life for countless fans across the country through his passion, energy, and deep love for the game,” FKF said in a statement.

“His contribution to sports broadcasting played a significant role in growing the local game and connecting fans to football moments that will forever remain cherished memories.”

FKF extended its condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and the wider sporting community, praying for eternal rest for his soul.

The Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) also joined the outpouring of grief, mourning the loss of the seasoned radio presenter and longtime member of the association.

“SJAK is deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of our colleague, friend, and dedicated member, Paul Kimani Kaberia, popularly known to his listeners and peers as Diblo,” read part of a statement by SJAK President James Waindi.

“Until his untimely demise, Kaberia was a vibrant radio presenter at Radio Jambo, where his passion for sports, infectious energy and distinct voice resonated with millions of sports fans across the country.”

SJAK hailed Diblo as an exceptional storyteller whose magnetic presence on the airwaves elevated sports journalism in Kenya. Beyond the microphone, the association remembered him as a pillar within the SJAK family and a key figure in SJAK FC, where his camaraderie, talent and unwavering team spirit left an indelible mark both on and off the pitch.

“We have lost not just a brilliant journalist, but a brother and a teammate whose passion for the game was evident in everything he did,” the statement added.

“Diblo’s passing leaves a massive void in the sports journalism fraternity and within SJAK FC. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the Radio Africa Group during this incredibly difficult time.”

Radio Jambo presenter Joseph Ogidi, popularly known as Gidi Gidi, said Diblo’s legacy would forever echo through Kenya’s sporting landscape. “His voice, passion and mastery of football commentary touched and entertained countless listeners across the country. “Lala salama Diblo. Your contribution to sports media will never be forgotten,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

Classic FM presenter Maina Kageni also paid tribute, remembering Diblo as a gifted broadcaster whose commitment and flair made him a standout figure behind the microphone. “What a loss. He was talented, passionate and committed… an exciting presenter and commentator.”
