Issa Laborde, an 18-year-old French-Kenyan skier, will represent Kenya as the nation’s sole alpine skier at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. This follows the withdrawal of compatriot Sabrina Simader due to financial constraints.

Early Life and Background

Born on March 12, 2007, in Echirolles, France, Laborde is the son of Josephine Nyokabi, a Kenyan mother, and Larbode, a French father. He grew up in the French Alps, immersed in a ski culture from a young age. Despite his French upbringing, Laborde chose to represent Kenya, embracing his heritage.

International Debut and Qualification

Laborde first competed internationally at the Gangwon 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games, becoming the first Kenyan male alpine skier to participate. He competed in all four alpine events, gaining valuable experience. This performance qualified him for the Milano Cortina Olympics, marking a significant milestone in Kenya’s winter sports development.

Opening Ceremony and Preparation

At the opening ceremony in Livigno, Laborde proudly carried the Kenyan flag, leading the nation’s delegation. He has been training intensively in Bormio, preparing for his debut event, the men’s giant slalom, scheduled for Saturday, February 14.

Funding and Support

Laborde’s participation is supported by the International Olympic Committee’s Olympic Solidarity fund, which assists athletes from nations with limited resources. He has expressed a desire to inspire other African nations and young talents to pursue winter sports.

Kenya’s Winter Sports History

Kenya’s winter sports journey has been pioneered by athletes like Sabrina Simader, who made history at PyeongChang 2018. However, funding remains a challenge for Kenyan winter sports athletes. Simader, initially planning a comeback, will be attending the Milano Cortina games as a spectator to support Laborde.

Significance of Laborde’s Participation

Laborde’s presence at the Milano Cortina Olympics signifies Kenya’s expanding Olympic participation beyond traditional sports. He aims to demonstrate that excellence is not limited by geography or background.
