Members of the African diaspora were officially sworn in as Ghanaian citizens on Tuesday, March 10. The ceremony signifies Ghana’s ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with people of African descent worldwide.

Citizenship Ceremony Details
Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang addressed the new citizens, reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to recognizing the transatlantic slave trade as a crime against humanity and creating pathways for diaspora reconnection. She stated that Ghana remains dedicated to being a home for the global African family, emphasizing that while history may scatter people, it cannot erase their identity.
The Vice President welcomed the new citizens as part of a broader vision to foster closer cooperation between Africa and its diaspora in areas including culture, trade, and development. She expressed belief that this reconnection will lead to new possibilities for global African cooperation, cultural renewal, and economic transformation. The ceremony was described as a symbolic homecoming for those whose ancestors were displaced through forced migration.
Legal and Administrative Process
Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, noted that the ceremony marked the completion of a legal and administrative process for individuals with strong ties to Ghana. He affirmed the government’s commitment, through the Interior Ministry and related institutions, to ensuring a transparent, credible, and legally consistent process for acquiring Ghanaian citizenship.
