Ohio University’s Center for International Studies is offering a fully-funded Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad (GPA) in Ghana. The program, titled OHIO Ghana GPA: Transnational African and African Diaspora Identities, is designed for educators and aims to enhance understanding of West African perspectives.
Program Overview
The four-week curriculum development program will focus on the culture, language, history, politics, and society of Ghana, viewed through the context of the transatlantic slave trade. The program begins in June 2025.
Eligibility and Preference
The program is intended for primary and secondary, community college, and university educators in Ohio. There is a preference for applicants from Appalachian Ohio.
Program Details
Participants will engage in daily experiential learning activities in Accra, Kumasi, and Cape Coast. The program also includes 10 hours of Akan language training. Program leaders will guide participants through these engagements.
Program Goals
The OHIO Ghana program seeks to provide educators with methods to incorporate West African perspectives into U.S. classrooms and curricula. It aims to strengthen understanding of the historical and contemporary connections between West Africa and Appalachian Ohio, relationships shaped by the transatlantic slave trade and global connections.

Applications for the OHIO Ghana GPA must be submitted by November 17, 2024.
