OSCE Enhances Human Rights Expertise of Uzbek Judges Through Targeted Training
TASHKENT, UZBEKISTAN – In a collaborative effort to strengthen the judicial system, the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan, in partnership with the Supreme Court of the Republic of Uzbekistan, recently conducted specialized training courses for investigative judges. These courses, held in Khiva (April 27-28) and Samarkand (April 30-May 1), aimed to bolster professional competencies and practical skills in safeguarding human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The training sessions brought together judges from the Bukhara, Khorezm, Samarkand, and Karakalpakstan regions, creating a valuable platform for knowledge sharing and capacity building. Participants focused on upholding human rights standards, critically assessing evidence, and delivering fair and well-reasoned judicial decisions.
Led by two experienced international judicial experts, the courses utilized a dynamic approach incorporating practical case studies, interactive discussions, and peer-to-peer experience sharing. Judges explored international human rights standards and learned how to effectively apply them within the Uzbek legal framework, drawing inspiration from best practices observed in other countries.
Claudia Fenz, one of the international experts, lauded the participants’ engagement and insightful contributions. She emphasized the crucial role of ongoing judicial training in ensuring the effective protection of fundamental freedoms, noting that strengthening the competencies of investigative judges is vital for maintaining fairness, upholding the rule of law, and fostering public trust in the justice system.
A key focus of the program was the protection of vulnerable groups and the prevention of violence, including violence against women and girls. Through practical exercises, participants gained the ability to immediately apply their newly acquired knowledge to real-world scenarios, reinforcing their commitment to upholding human rights for all.
