The Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Punjab, hosted an International Conference on “Expanding Horizons of Human Rights, Fundamental Freedoms and Fundamental Rights in the Age of Globalisation” on April 18–19, 2026. The conference explored the evolving landscape of human rights within the context of globalisation.
Conference Organisation and Participants
The event was organised by the Centre for Advanced Studies in Human Rights (CASIHR) and the Centre for Advanced Studies in Labour Welfare (CASLW) at RGNUL, under the guidance of Dr. Jaswinder Kaur and Dr. Gagan Preet, in collaboration with Punjabi University. Academicians, legal practitioners, and scholars from across the globe attended, including delegates from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Lesotho, Mauritius, Nepal, Oman, Syria, and Uganda. Over 10 countries were represented.
Inaugural Session and Keynote Addresses
Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Rajesh Bindal were present at the inaugural session. RGNUL Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Jai Shankar Singh welcomed the dignitaries and delegates. Justice Karol emphasized the increasing importance of human rights and fundamental freedoms in a globalized world, referencing the UN Charter and human rights covenants. He highlighted the Constitution of India, specifically Articles 51A(b) and 51A(h), and their connection to India’s civilisational values, encouraging students to promote human rights awareness. Justice Bindal addressed international human rights frameworks and contemporary concerns such as legal aid, sustainability, green credits, and privacy, referencing Part III of the Constitution, including Articles 14, 19, and 21, and relevant Supreme Court judgments. Prof. (Dr.) Jai Shankar Singh also spoke on the protection and promotion of human rights, fundamental freedoms, and fundamental rights.
Academic Programme
The conference featured a total of 15 sessions: 2 offline and 13 online. One hundred and thirty-four participants presented research papers focusing on contemporary human rights issues. Experts evaluated the sessions to ensure rigorous academic engagement.
