The V&A East Museum will open its doors on April 18, 2026, with a landmark exhibition titled “The Music is Black: A British Story.” This inaugural exhibition traces 125 years of Black musical innovation in Britain and will run until January 3, 2027.

Exhibition Overview

The multisensory show explores the profound impact of Black artistry on British music and culture. It features over 200 objects, including fashion, photography, musical instruments, and personal writings. The exhibition is structured into four acts.

Act 1: Origins of Music

This section traces the African roots of music in Britain, exploring early influences and the formation of musical communities.

Act 2: Windrush & Beyond

This act examines the arrival of the Windrush generation and its subsequent impact on British music, highlighting the emergence of new genres and sounds.

Act 3: Sounds of the City

This section focuses on the vibrant music scenes that developed in urban areas, showcasing the creativity and innovation of Black artists in genres like reggae, grime, and drill.

Act 4: Shaping the Future

The final act looks at the ongoing legacy of Black music in Britain and its influence on contemporary artists and the broader cultural landscape.
