Ghana to Host 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, Marking a Historic Return
Ghana is set to welcome back the TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027, officially awarded the hosting rights by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). This marks a significant milestone for the West African nation, 28 years after the Black Satellites clinched the trophy on home soil in 1999.
The decision, communicated via a formal letter to Ghana Football Association (GFA) General Secretary Lawyer Prosper Harrison Addo, Esq., underscores Ghana’s growing reputation as a premier footballing nation in Africa. The announcement has been met with widespread excitement within the Ghanaian football community, particularly as the nation prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Beyond the logistical and administrative aspects, this hosting opportunity holds deep significance. Ghana’s previous hosting of the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in 1999 culminated in a memorable victory for the Black Satellites, a moment etched in the nation’s sporting history. Now, they have the chance to recreate that triumph in front of their passionate home fans.
Adding another layer of meaning, the 2027 tournament coincides with Ghana’s 70th Independence anniversary, making it a truly special occasion.
CAF has confirmed a collaborative approach, working closely with the GFA and a newly formed Local Organising Committee to ensure a seamless and successful tournament. This partnership will focus on key areas such as infrastructure readiness, logistics, security, and creating an exceptional fan experience, all contributing to a world-class event that reflects the rising stature of African football.
Ghana’s selection as host comes as no surprise, given its consistent track record of successfully hosting major football and sporting events. The nation’s credentials as a reliable and enthusiastic tournament host are continually strengthening.
Previously, Ghana hosted the senior Africa Cup of Nations in 2008, where Egypt secured a record-extending sixth title. A decade later, the country welcomed the 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, becoming the first to host the women’s edition. More recently, Ghana successfully hosted the 13th African Games in March 2024, showcasing its ability to manage complex, multi-discipline events across multiple venues. The nation also hosted the WAFU Zone B U-17 Cup of Nations in 2024 at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra.
