The Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) has given the government and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) a seven-day notice of a potential strike. The union cited unresolved labor issues as the reason for the ultimatum.
Unresolved Labor Concerns
KAWU Secretary General Moses Ndiema addressed the media on Tuesday, expressing concerns regarding the lack of salary reviews for employees who have worked for over 11 years. He stated that the union has not seen adjustments to salaries despite long periods of service.
Allegations of Discrimination
Ndiema also accused the KCAA of discriminatory practices against certain employees. He warned of significant repercussions if these issues are not resolved within the seven-day timeframe.
Threat of Airspace Closure
KAWU officials stated that if their demands are not met, the union will take action, including closing the airspace, grounding flights, and shutting down Kenyan airports. Ndiema delivered this as a warning to the government and KCAA.
Call for Government Intervention
Walter Ongeri, also present, urged the government to intervene promptly to prevent a crisis in the aviation sector and to avoid disruption of operations.
