The international order is facing significant challenges following World War II, leading to questions about global interactions and the associated risks. Oleksandra Matviychuk, head of the Center for Civil Liberties and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, recently stated that the Greenland issue has gained prominence in global politics, sometimes overshadowing the situation in Ukraine.

Matviychuk expressed concern that the current global landscape is reverting to a system where powerful nations dictate the rules, undermining international law and creating instability. She believes this situation can impact any country, even major global players.

Greenland and Renewed US Focus

The Greenland issue has recently re-emerged as a central point of discussion in the United States, particularly during the presidency of Donald Trump.

Discrepancies in Negotiations and Frontline Reality

Regarding international negotiations concerning Ukraine, Matviychuk highlighted a disconnect between stated intentions and the actual conditions on the ground. She cited UN data indicating a 31% increase in civilian casualties in Ukraine last year, despite negotiations taking place.

Justice and Peace Agreements

Matviychuk believes that justice may not be a primary consideration in potential peace agreements. She suggested that the current US administration might not prioritize justice, and Russia could resist agreements including such provisions. As a result, Ukraine should pursue a separate international legal track through institutions like the International Criminal Court, a special tribunal for crimes of aggression, and a registry of damages.

Matviychuk emphasized that Ukraine’s strategy should involve pursuing justice independently, as peace agreements may not guarantee accountability. She urged the international community to prioritize the realities faced by Ukrainians over diplomatic declarations and perceived negotiation progress.
