Witnesses describe bodies lying in the streets, and rights groups say the death toll could be in the hundreds. The government has not addressed the allegations and maintains the country is calm and united.
In Dar es Salaam, life has resumed cautiously. Some victims fear speaking out, and authorities have charged nearly 400 people with election-related offences.
