The Portfolio Committee on Community Safety in the Gauteng Legislature, South Africa, has reacted with concern to data indicating accusations of sexual violence against police officials. The information, sourced from the Independent Police Investigative Directorate’s (IPID) 2024/25 Annual Report, was presented during a stakeholder engagement session.

The session focused on assessing the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) adherence to the Domestic Violence Act of 1998.

Allegations Against Police Officials

The IPID report revealed that approximately 100 police officials nationwide face accusations of sexual violence or rape. Committee Chairperson Bandile Masuku stated the involvement of officers tasked with community protection is deeply troubling.

Betrayal of Public Trust

The Committee expressed that the alleged actions represent a significant breach of public trust and negatively impact confidence in law enforcement. They issued a strong condemnation of the allegations.

Expectations of SAPS Members

The Committee emphasized that SAPS members are required to maintain high standards of integrity, professionalism, and respect for human rights. Any participation in sexual violence is deemed incompatible with their duties and should result in prompt and impactful consequences.
