U.S. Marine veteran Lee Newby of Warren was honored by Mayor James Fouts last month to commemorate his 100th birthday.

When Lee Newby was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942, he did not think of himself as a champion for civil rights.

Newby, a Warren resident who celebrated his 100th birthday in April, is one of the Montford Point Marines — the first Black Americans to serve in the Marine Corps.
