Pittsburgh, Pa. — The first paramedics in the United States were group of black men in Pittsburgh who worked for the Freedom House Ambulance Service in the 1960s and 70s. 

The Freedom House Ambulance Service, started in 1967, "laid the foundation for standard emergency treatments," according to the Senator John Heinz History Center.
