A racial gerrymandering lawsuit brought by Black critics of Michigan’s independent mapping commission is going to trial, endangering Democrats’ first stint controlling Lansing since the 1980s.

The state must defend against claims that its redistricting commission violated federal law by drawing 2022 state House and Senate districts in a way that discriminated against Black voters, a federal three-judge panel ruled Tuesday.
