Dr. Bunmi Fatoye, Medical Officer of Health / Physician
“I remember feeling like a lone ranger. There were maybe six Black physicians that I knew of when I first came to Manitoba; that’s it. It wasn’t easy.”
My professional journey began in Nigeria, where I completed medical school before coming to Canada as an International Medical Graduate. In 1999, I was matched into the residency program in Manitoba, and when I arrived, I realized I was one of the only Black people, Black physicians in the system. I initially came to Toronto, and while there, I didn’t see myself as being different or think about being Black because there were so many Black people around.
