‘Extreme risk’ applications to seize guns are surging in New York

ALBANY — The number of "extreme risk protection orders" being issued by State Police have been surging in the wake of an executive order issued by Gov. Kathy Hochul last month that mandated troopers file the court applications anytime they encounter a person who is "likely" to be at risk of harm to themselves or others.
