Gary Bettman strode out the back door of the private air terminal and into a light January rain, creating a gap between himself and the five others in his traveling party as he hustled up the stairs and onto the National Hockey League jet.
Bound for Buffalo on one of the couple dozen NHL franchise visits he makes each season, Bettman removed his coat and settled into the first seat that faced front, tucking away a bag as staff members chose their spots behind him.
Up well before dawn . . .
