U.S-Born WWII Spy Josephine Baker Becomes First Black Woman Honored In French Pantheon

Josephine Baker, a U.S.-born entertainer, civil rights activist and French spy during World War II, became the first Black woman to be inducted into France's Pantheon, the Associated Press reported. Various politicians, organizations and figures have called for years for Baker's inclusion in the historic monument that honors the likes of Marie Curie, Victor Hugo and French Enlightenment writer Voltaire.

Her nomination came in the wake of last year's protests against police violence in France, a parallel to the nationwide movement in the U.S. after
